Whole Bun Measurement
RangeMetrics’ BunScanner is your solution for capturing 100% dimensional information for your slabstock buns – long or short, hot or cold. The BunScanner measures complete side and top profiles along the bun length and provides real-time size and shape information along with programmable interfaces to your production scheduling software. With the BunScanner, you can:
- Determine minimum height and widths along the bun length
- Calculate the largest rectangular block that can be cut from a bun
- Add dimensional information to the bun tag in the plant scheduling system
The BunScanner casts a laser line around the tops and sides of the bun to capture up to 1000 dimensions around each profile, with profiles spaced continuously along the bun length.
The profiles, along with instantaneous value of height and width, are displayed in real time and can be viewed by the pouring operators.
The profiles are used to calculate overall volume, useful (rectangular) volume and percent scrap of each slab.
At the end of each bun, complete dimension files are sent to the plant network, with heights and widths averaged over programmable-length slices.
This dimensional information can be fed back into the foam plant MRP’s scheduling program as soon as the bun is through the BunScanner. The results can then be presented in a real-time updated scheduling chart:

Then the cold dimensions can be compared to the previous hot dimensions and daily shrinkage rates can be calculated, rather than simply estimated. It all leads to reduced scrap.
